Anchors Aweigh: Setting Sail with Correct Anchor Text

Welcome back to another riveting edition of #whatiswednesday! This week, we are going to tackle Anchor Texts. What is that, you might ask? It’s really not so complicated. All anchor text is, is text on the page that links to another page.

For example, let’s say you have a cooking blog and you are showing someone how to make lemonade (let’s keep it simple). So, you might have this text on your page:

Super Delicious Lemonade

Ingredients:

Water

Sugar

Lemons

Now, let’s say you have a page full of all of your other recipes involving lemons that you want the viewer to see. You can make it so that when the reader clicks or hovers over the word “lemons” it will take them to the “recipes with lemons” page of your website. In this case, “lemons” is now the anchor text.

If you are using WordPress to run your site, then using anchor texts is super simple! Simply, highlight the word or words that you want to be anchor text. Click the link image on the top of the text box. It should look like this:

How to Add Anchor Text

Then a box will come up asking where you would like the link to take the reader, paste your link there and voila! Your blog post now has anchor text.

There are a few different types of anchor texts to be aware of:

Exact Match Anchor Text

This is the most common form of anchor texts. With exact anchor text, the words will match the link that it leads too. For example, if you highlight lemons, an exact match would be www.cookingblog.com/lemons

Backlink Anchor Text

Let’s say you have a partnership with another blog. Backlink anchor text would be the anchor text used by the partner website that links to yours.

One-Way Anchor Text Backlinks

If the partner website links to you, but you don’t link back to them, you have what is called a one-way anchor texts backlink. This is great for SEO and the more one-way anchor texts backlinks a web page has from websites with high page rank, the better it will rank on search engines.

When you are just starting out, it’s probably best to stick with exact match anchor and let the others come over time.
